Having the right sleeping bag is very
important. While having lightweight sleeping bags is necessary for hiking,
a scout who gets cold or hot over night will not want to go camping again.
Sleeping bags come in degree ratings. If you are going camping in the
winter or the desert, you normally do not want a sleeping bag that is rated for
40 degrees, your scouts and leaders would get cold due to the low night
temperature. If you are camping during the summer, you normally do not
need a sleeping bag rated for -15 degrees your scout would probably fry in the
bag. This is why we not only have our sleeping bags separated by weight
(see hiking gear/sleeping bags for lightweight sleeping bags); we have them
organized by degree rating (see camping gear/sleeping bags). A sleeping bag of
the proper weight and rating can make the difference between a good campout for
your scouts and one where the scouts don't want to camp again. Remember, keep
your scout comfortable and he or she will enjoy the outdoors more.
